Have you visions of going green this year? Being more ecofriendly, with fewer emissions, creating less negative impact on Mother Nature? Us too! So how do we go about it?

One significant way to do this is by opting for an electric car. Now, it may sound scary, but actually we think you’re set to be impressed.

The electric car revolution is a relatively new concept for the automotive industry. Some companies have agreed to keep electric and hybrid vehicles as their sole focus, while others realise this is not always practical for 100% of the market.

Nissan, Ford, Chevrolet have all showcased electric models over the last few years and Tesla has been hugely pro-active at using battery power to help towards a healthy and sustainable environment.

Making their mark this year is Mercedes-Benz. The electric drive range, by Smart, includes the smart fortwo, smart fortwo cabrio and smart forfour. Three choices to suit the eco-conscious yet style hunger driver. These new releases were praised for their city car capabilities with the fortwo having a tighter turning circle (6.95 metres) than that of a black cab.

Next Green Cars commented: “Already considered very capable city cars, the smart line-up is made better still with the addition of an electric powertrain. Perfect to nip in and out of traffic in, the electric smart line-up –fortwo ed, fortwo cabrio ed, and forfour ed – makes a great choice for local trips.”

The smart electric drive has a range of up to 100 miles when its 17.6 kWh lithium-ion battery is fully charged, making it ideal for urban use. In 2018 a 22 kW on-board charger will be available as standard, meaning the battery can be charged from 20 per cent to 80 per cent in under an hour using a wall-box with a three-phase connection or one of the many public charging stations available.

Currently the smart fortwo cabrio electric drive is the only electric cabriolet currently on sale, so keep an eye on the Mercedes-Benz of Poole website for news on future releases.

By buying an electric car you can also receive government subsidies for being environmentally conscious. You’ll never have to buy fuel again, making ‘car life’ cheaper and more ecofriendly.  Electric cars undergo the same fitness and testing as fuel powered cars, making them equally safe to drive. This type of car boasts being a lot quieter, therefore contributing to the reduction of noise pollution, whilst being cost effective 365 days a year.

As a Lifestyle Partner of Mercedes-Benz of Poole, Sandown Group, we are looking forward to test driving the Smart electric range over the coming months. Watch this space.

Prices start at £20,920 for the smart fortwo with the smart fortwo cabrio costing £23,060 and the smart forfour at £21,415.

Electric power is so 2018!
